queetz • 2mo ago • Edited 2mo ago K Pop Demon Hunters is still American despite it being about Korean pop culture. Both K Pop Demon Slayers and Demon Slayer are ultimately Sony (Japanese) properties if you climb up the corporate chain. But that would also mean things like Spiderman movies, whose rights are owned by Sony Pics, are Japanese even though its clearly American. The joys of globalization.
So who you may cheer for would depends, among other things, if you want a Japanese Studio (Ufotable) or an American studio (Sony Pictures Animation based in LA) to win.
San-T-74 • 2mo ago Criminal not to include Chainsaw Man Capital-Frosting-434 • 2mo ago I think that's because, even though Western film awards committees are starting to recognize animation and take it more seriously as a mature medium (as evidenced by Ghibli's well-deserved 2023 win with Boy and the Heron), there's still this prevalent and stubborn notion here in the States that animation is for kids and families. Hence, K-Pop Demon Hunters, a PG family feature, and Demon Slayer, a PG-13 movie aimed at adolescents, get nominated, but Chainsaw Man, a hard-R feature with graphic violence and sexuality, is passed over. (Granted, Chainsaw Man is shonen so it would be considered teen-friendly in Japan ... but in the US it is definitely in the adults-only category).
HereToReadWeebs • 2mo ago Demon Slayer is definitely not PG13. One of the goriest movies of the year. But that still didn’t keep parents from bringing their kids tho.
Capital-Frosting-434 • 2mo ago Fair but I think parents are generally more forgiving of fantasy/supernatural violence than sexual content, hence Demon Slayer being considered more of a "teen movie" and Chainsaw Man being more "adult." A movie about K-pop demon hunters that even Sony had no faith in getting nominated is crazy to me. What a time to be alive.
BackgroundTotal2872 • 2mo ago I haven’t seen Infinity Castle (because I haven’t had time to watch the rest of the series leading up to it yet), but I’ve seen hundreds of people talking about how great it was, and I’m glad that
